c) Content & Meaning
Mise en scene:
The music video is set entirely outside. This is fairly unusual for a indie music video. The locations are mainly in the countryside or on the outskirts of cities. Moreover, during the narrative they walk down streets. This type of shot is fairly iconic to the independent genre. This video also showcases shots of instruments such as drums and guitars. These can be icons as they reinforce that they are actually playing the music, which is vital in the indie genre. Most of the band wear shirts and skinny jeans, which is the fashion trend seen throughout the genre. Additionally the lead singers hair is short with sideburns similar to the Arctic Monkeys hair who i think lead the genre. The band perform as though they feel the music. They nod their heads to the beat and the lead singer sings to the camera. This may make the audience feel as though he is singing directly to them and can connect with the audience. This is also stereotypical to the genre and seen in many of the other videos i have analysed. he lighting throughout the video is generally high key. Although, in parts when they are performing, it is night time so the light is unnatural and creates a contrast between them and the background. This can make them seem like the centre of attention.
Camerawork & Editing:
Ride contains many close up shots of the lead singers face while he is singing. Within these shots he sings directly to the camera which can be voyeuristic as it can make the audience feel as though he is singing directly to them. There are also group shots, containing the band performing and during the narrative. There is instances of panning, when the camera pans into the shot and onto the subject. Ride seems to be shot predominately handheld, creating a shaky video, which is stereotypical to the genre. The video additionally includes low angle shots, looking up at the main singer. This can be as though we are watching the and as though they are on stage thus being voyeuristic. Ride contains jump cuts, where the camera cuts to match the beat. These cuts tend to occur when the singer is not singing and it is just instrumentals, possibly too keep the audiences attention. Furthermore there are action matches within this video. One example would be when they are sliding down a dam in a paddling pool. The camera cuts but matches the action in the corresponding shot. `the sound in this video is non diegetic as it is the bands song 'Ride' in the background. At the start of the video however there is an example of diegetic sound as we hear birds chirping as though that's the sound coming from that footage.
Meaning:
The video's narrative involves a female doll. The video denotes them dragging and having fun with this doll. The band is made up of men, and therefore this doll can connote a sex object. This can relate to Laura Mulveys theory in which men view women as sex objects. This video can prove Laura's theory as the men use this doll however they want. This could also signify the band objectifying women. This may have a negative effect on the audience as they may replicate what they see the band doing to the doll. This may also link to the indie genre as it is generally male dominated.
e) Genre
The Genre of this music video coincides with the song which is Independent rock. Moreover this video is a hybrid, containing both a narrative and a bands performance.
f) Audience
The target audience for this video would young males due to the band being of a similar age. Additionally this video is shot in a higher class location. Therefore I believe that they would be in the bands B/C1 as they are most likely to relate to the locations of the video.

c) Content & Meaning
Mise en scene:
This video is set entirely on stage, and is of them performing their song. They all wear short sleeve t-shirts and jeans, similar to the fashion at the time of release. The way the band performs seems relaxed in comparison to others in the same genre. There instruments are also icons of the genre and can encode that they create their own music. Although the music is within the indie genre, the bands way of performing and hairstyles don't seem to be similar to others within the genre. The lighting within this video is low-key as is it is in black and white which makes the stage appear dark.
Camerawork & Editing:
The majority of this video is made up of close ups of the band members faces and instruments. This is stereotypical of the genre. Additionally this can show the audience detail of the instruments and the bands faces. This may also make the video seem as though the band are performing to us which is voyeuristic. The videos movement is static with only some zooming in, which I believe has been done digitally. The majority of the video is shot from below the band giving a low angle. This also makes it feel as though we are looking up at them on stage, which is a frequent convention of the genre. Furthermore there are shots of an audience at eye level, which can make it seem as though we are with them. This video is a highly standout video due to its editing. This is as most of the shots are static yet in post production they created jump cuts. This has been done by expanding the image and moving around every time the beat changes to create a visually appealing video. Moreover the video is mainly in black and white which is iconic to indie videos. The sound within Banquet is non diegetic as it has just the song playing over the top of the video.
Meaning:
This music video has many denotations of conventions of the indie music genre. For example they make a performance video and they are based on stage. Additionally they are playing instruments which can connote and reinforce that they are playing their own music.
e) Genre
This music video falls under the independent rock category due to the song. However unlike many videos within this genre, it is not a hybrid video. In staid concentrating mainly on the performance and editing.
f) Audience
I believe the audience for this video would be predominately males. I think they will be in the C1,C2 NRS Social grade bands, as they need to be able to afford the product.

c) Content & Meaning
Mise en Scene:
This music video is primarily shot outside, and in the streets of a foreign country. Streets seem to be a common location within independent rock videos, becoming a convention of the genre. Because they are outdoors they have plenty of open space to perform in. Although the video does not have a performance in it, there is iconography of instruments. For example there is a guitar next to the main singer on a bed. This may connote that he has been playing the guitar and creating music. This can also reinforce that they make their own music. They perform the narrative while acting on the phone and drinking bottles of alcohol. This can also be stereotypical to the genre as many are stereotyped as drinkers. The Lighting in this video is predominately high key as they are on brightly lit streets. This high key lighting can connote happiness and this could possibly be the emotions of the band being conveyed over to us. This also links into the lyrics in which they describe how life can be a long road but if you're strong you can pull through.
Camerawork & Editing:
This video is very stereotypical to the genre with regards to camerawork. One example is the frequent close ups of the lead singer singing to the camera. This is seen throughout indie music videos and is an icon of the genre. Moreover, the music video is dominated by group shots of the band, which I have seen frequently within other indie videos. This music video also contains many wide shots, which help show all the band members. Moreover it can reveal all the action that's going on in the background of the location. The majority of the movement within this music video is tracking of the band walking. This is also stereotypical of the genre and is seen in many modern indie music videos. The video is shot mainly at eye level. This can connote to the audience that they are on a same level as the band and as though the audience can relate to them. This video uses jump-cuts. These jump-cuts are cleverly blended into the video and are barely noticeable. However, they match the beat and make it as though time has passed slightly. This is also a convention of the indie genre. Additionally the sound in the music video is non diegetic as it is a song being played in the background. However at the beginning of the video there is some diegetic sound as we here the ambiance of the streets.
Meaning:
This video mainly denotes waking up after a typical night out. However not portrayed in the video, the lyrics talk about taking drugs and drinking alcohol. The video idealizes drinking and going on nights out, which is also a stereotype of the genre. This may also come across to the audience as them being ideal selves. The video is also highly gritty and connotes the reality of some peoples live. Additionally the drugs can connote negative thoughts and people may then look down on the video. However as they are talking about how they are on a road to recovery this may have positive connotations.
e) Genre
Gunga Din is a part of the indie music video genre. Unlike many videos of the genre this videos doesn't contain a performance of the band.
f) Audience
The target audience for this video would most likely be males over the age of 18. This is as they can relate to the video as they are most likely to go on nights out. They would most likely be in the C1/C2 bands as they need money to go out yet are most likely still at a low level of work due to their ages.

c) Content & Meaning
Mise en Scene:
The setting of this music video is in a dark performance space. It has a feel as though they are performing on stage due to the lighting and their props. This is as they have their instruments set out as though they are on stage. Those iconic instruments include guitars, drums and also the speakers are iconic. This also encodes that they produce their own music and not made for them. Although the lighting in the video is low key, we can still make out that they are wearing clothes that are stereotypical to the genre. For example a shirt and jeans are seen on the lead singer which is worn by many bands within the indie genre. The way the band performs is highly passionate and is similar to the way others perform in the same genre. The lighting in the video is low key. It is dim and there is little amounts of light within it.
Camerawork & Editing:
Kathleen uses a highly creative editing technique to help add visual interest to a video of a performance. This effect is mainly used on the lead singer when he is singing. This technique is a ghost looking effect, where one video is delayed and overlaid on top of the original. They are also contrasting colours which create a anaglyph effect, as though it is 3D. Additionally this effect is used as though it is a jumpcut and matches with the beat. The sound within Kathleen is evidently non-diegetic due to it being a music video. There are many instances of the use of close up shots. They are mainly of the lead singer which can help show what the importance of the shot is. This is also a convention of the indie genre. The camera movement is static throughout the music video and the editing helps give the feeling of the camera moving.
Meaning:
This video does not have a lot to pick up any meaning from as it is a straight performance. However the lyrics are abut being madly in love with someone who's completely backward, but completely gets you. This can be seen in the way the band performs, as they perform fairly emotionally and with passion. Moreover the anaglyph effect can connote that they seem to be moving forward however always seem to be stuck in a loop.
e) Genre
The genre of this music video is indie rock. It matches many of the conventions of the genre. For example they use instruments which can connote that they make their own music.
f) Audience
The audience for this video would be males aged 15-24. This is as they can relate most to the band and their culture and lyrics.

c) Content & Meaning
Mise en scene:
This music video is predominately set within a recording studio. Some parts of the recording studio are also highly unfinished and add to the indie look of worn down locations. The video also includes footage of the band walking down streets. These two locations are highly popular within the independent music genre as they are seen as "hip". Moreover their outfits are also stereotypical within the genre. Costumes such as leather jackets and jeans are seen as the type that would be in this genre. Additionally the use of instruments can reinforce that they are independent, and that they create their own music. This is far away from the pop world where their music is mainly written not by the artist. Guitars and drums are strong icons of indie music and can connote this to the audience. Furthermore, some of the bands hairstyles are iconic to the genre. For example the medium length black hair that is a hairstyle popular with other performers within the genre. The way the band performs, is stereotypical to the genre. I believe this as they perform with passion and all have facial expressions. For example the lead singer sings into the microphone while twisting their head, similar to others within the genre. The lighting throughout the video is high key and there is little s amount of shots with low key lighting. the majority of the light is artificial as it is predominately shot inside.
Camerawork & Editing:
The camerawork within this video is iconic to the genre. There are plenty of the shot types, being close ups. These mainly being of the lead singer, as though they're performing directly to us, which is very voyeuristic. This is also showing what the main focus of the video is in detail. Additionally there are many close ups of the bands instruments, which we see in many other indie music videos. The majority of the movement within the video is tracking the artist in focus. For example if the lead singer is moving his head singing into the mic the camera will follow the movement of their head. Many of the shots are low angle shots. This can possibly be a way of connoting that they are on a stage and you are looking up at them. This may however have a negative effect on the audience as they may seem to be belittling them, as though they are more powerful.
The music video includes a narrative alongside the performance. Therefore there is crosscutting between these two parts of the video. The indie genre is often known for having narratives within videos. Moreover there is jump cuts in parts that match the beat of the music. There is an instance of diegetic sound at the start of the video, where they are warming up, playing and singing in the studio before the recording.
Meaning:
This music video only seems to contain men which is surprisingly common within the indie genre. The majority of indie bands are made up of men. Furthermore I believe that this can link to Laura Mulveys theory of male gaze and that all women are sex objects. This theory can connote abuse due to the idealisation of women being used for sex. The use of instruments in this video is very stereotypical of the genre and can also reinforce that they create their own content.
e) Genre
The genre of this music video is independent rock, to mach the song. The video matches the conventions of the genre as it is a hybrid music video. This means that there is a narrative as well as a performance.
f) Audience
The target audience for this video would mainly be males between 18-40. I believe this as they go to a pub within the video, where someone under the age of 18 most likely will not be drinking at a pub. Additionally the stereotypes of people who go to pubs in the day are middle aged men. Therefore this creates a large range for their target audience. Due to this the social grade for this group of people will most likely be C2/C3.
